GTA 5 RealityV 3.3 Released With New Character, Water, and Grass Rendering

The Enhanced Edition version is free, while the Legacy Edition build is available to BadassBaboon's Gold Tier members.

BadassBaboon has released RealityV V3.3, a graphics mod for Grand Theft Auto 5 that focuses on the details players see throughout Los Santos. The update improves character skin and hair rendering, reworks water and grass, and adds several smaller changes for roads, vehicles, and rainy weather.

Character models should look less like plastic figures thanks to new skin lighting, including diffusion, sub-surface scattering, warmer shadow tones, and improved rim lighting. Hair can now react to all light sources, while added depth and color work aims to make the game’s older hair models look less flat.

Water receives one of the broader visual passes in RealityV V3.3. Waves are stronger and more translucent, reflections have been improved, canals receive flatter reflection behavior, and pools gain depth-based color plus a procedural ripple system. Ocean simulation and foam also receive fixes, with the changes drawing inspiration from Grand Theft Auto 6 and Source 2.

Roads now use a parallax effect tuned for VDE’s road textures, while grass gains better variation and individual strand movement in the wind. Rain droplets on vehicle windows and body panels receive improved depth, lighting, reflection, and animation, including a first-person view adjustment for droplets seen from inside cars.

RealityV V3.3 is available for both the Legacy and Enhanced Editions of GTA 5. The Legacy build is limited to BadassBaboon’s Gold Tier members, while the Enhanced build is free through the modder’s Patreon post.

RealityV joins other recent PC projects for the upgraded edition, including a pair of GTA 5 Enhanced mods that added dismemberment and a Dead Eye-style targeting system.

Grand Theft Auto 5 Legacy RealityV V3.3 Patch Notes

The Legacy build’s changelog covers skin and hair lighting, water behavior, vehicle rain effects, grass animation, road depth, metallic paint, flares, and weather effects. The complete release notes are below.

Improved skin rendering:

  • Added modern diffusion on character skins with realistic warm light scattering.
  • Added sub-surface scattering effect with proper shadow side tinting, sheen, micro occlusion, and sharpening.
  • Added rim lighting improvements so the characters no longer look like plastic or clay dolls.
  • Added subdermal and epidermal lighting. Characters now feel like they have actual flesh with blood in them.
  • Added a peach fuzz-style rim lighting to the skin.
  • Added specular damping in creases to make the curvatures of the skin light realistically.
  • Added crevice color bleed so nostril folds and the neck look warm.
  • Remapped the skin specular curve, so the skin shines more realistically.
  • Works fine with custom head blend models and custom clothing.

Improved hair:

  • Hair can now be lit by all light sources, including the sun.
  • Added back-lit sub-surface scattering. Light now gets trapped and reflected in the hair.
  • Added a custom curve to fix the low-poly hair models looking like cardboard boxes.
  • Added root cavity occlusion and strand depth grading. Hair reflects and looks realistic at roots and all points of the hair.
  • Added hair tint color sampled from final hair color, making specular and sheen on the hair reflect properly.

Improved the water:

  • Added wider, softer specular highlights and stronger, much more realistic waves, inspired by GTA 6 and Source 2.
  • Added reflection flattening in canals while maintaining choppy sea water.
  • Added improved reflection quality and intensity. Water can now properly reflect the sky too.
  • Added sub-surface scattering, making water feel and look translucent in the waves.
  • Added depth-graded color to the water depth for pools, so they actually feel like they have depth now.
  • Improved pool waters with a new procedural ripple system.
  • Improved and fixed ocean water simulation issues. Waves will now also reflect much more realistically as a result.
  • Improved water foam simulation.

Improved raindrops on vehicles:

  • Added proper depth cue and light transmission to the rain droplets when viewed from inside the cars in first-person view.
  • Improved the overall raindrop generation and animation. Windows will also get more raindroplets.
  • Fixed raindrops not reflecting properly and looking flat on both windows and car bodies.
  • Fixed raindrops sometimes randomly disappearing.

Improved grass fur:

  • Grass now has sub-surface scattering and lights just like real-life grass under the sun does.
  • Grass dithering issue is directly patched in the shaders.
  • Grass fur now has better blending and variation and looks less repeated.
  • Grass strands now move individually with the wind. They’re no longer a static effect. Zooming in, you can even see the tips move more than the roots do.

Other changes:

  • Added real parallax effect to the roads, fine-tuned to work best with VDE’s road textures.
  • Improved and fixed the custom metallic paint, with better-looking aluminum flakes and strands.
  • Added 5 new optional flares to pick, off by default.
  • Added on-screen rain drops with different intensity depending on the active rain weather type.
