More than 100 large highway interchanges are being built for Euro Truck Simulator 2‘s upcoming Soul of Anatolia expansion, and each one starts as a hand-built prototype in a separate test map.
SCS Software detailed that process in its Steam announcement, which features map designer Pavel discussing his work on the region’s roads. Pavel has worked at SCS Software for more than seven years, with the past two focused mainly on roads and highways.
His responsibilities on Soul of Anatolia include designing large interchanges, preparing specifications for prefabs, tunnels, and traffic lights, and placing those elements across the map. He previously worked on the Greece DLC, but the new project gives him much more room to influence the overall road layout.
How the interchanges take shape
Pavel begins each interchange in a dedicated test map rather than building directly into the main project. He first chooses the number of lanes and the type of junction, then adjusts curve radii and road lengths while following rules for bridge clearance, road banking, and maximum gradients.
The goal is to match the real-world reference as closely as possible without creating an oversized or awkward route. Once the prototype works, it is copied into the project and placed in its assigned location, where the team can make smaller adjustments.
New prefabs follow a similar process. Pavel first checks whether an existing piece can handle the situation before designing something new. If a new prefab is needed, he uses simple geometry, including circle radii and sectors, to create a compact shape that gives both AI traffic and players enough room to pass through.

After the road shape is ready, Pavel creates a blueprint showing the markings and the routes intended for AI traffic. He then sends the road department the prototype coordinates, blueprints, and a basic description. When the finished prefab returns, he either provides feedback or approves it for use on the map.

Work on the interchanges will continue with smaller details, including traffic lights and other accessories. Pavel also said one new interchange type and a modified existing prefab have already been created for drivers to use in the expansion.
Road construction is only one part of the wider project. An earlier Soul of Anatolia preview showed SCS Software preparing around 300 generic building assets alongside landmark models, giving the expansion its visual identity away from the highways as well.
