Sony Interactive Entertainment said it will stop producing physical discs for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028. After that point, new PlayStation releases will be sold in digital form through PlayStation Store and at retail, while games that already launched, or arrive on disc before January 2028, will keep their physical editions.
The company framed the move as a response to how players buy games now, pointing to the shift away from discs and toward digital libraries. Sony also said it will keep resources focused on how people access and buy games, whether that means stores or PlayStation Store.
The announcement comes with separate PlayStation Store updates for PS3 and PS Vita announced on July 1, 2026, but that is a different change from the disc-production plan.
