Subnautica 2 has been in early access since May 14, 2026, and the first hours can feel like the ocean is trying to win an argument with you. That is part of the charm, but it also means new players need a few habits in place before they start wandering too far from safety.
The good news is that the early game rewards patience, planning, and a little respect for the water around you. If you want a closer look at staying fed and hydrated, food and water basics is the next stop.
1. Keep oxygen at the top of the list
Oxygen is the one resource you cannot ignore in Subnautica 2. Surface breaks and air bubbles from certain plants can save you in a pinch, but deeper runs call for better tools. O2 tanks buy you more time, the Tadpole vehicle extends your range, and even a small powered base gives you a place to breathe before heading back out.
2. Treat the ocean like a place full of predators
The game makes one thing very clear early on. You are not the top of the food chain. Toxic flora, aggressive fish, and full-grown Leviathans can shut down a run fast, so it pays to read the room and keep moving. Small caverns, ravines, strong currents, the Dash biomod, and the Air Bladder can all help you slip away when a threat closes in.
3. Scan almost everything you can
Scanning is one of the fastest ways to open up the early game. Human debris can unlock blueprints for tools like the Repair Tool and Habitat Builder Tool, but you usually need more than one part before the recipe appears. Wildlife scans matter too, since they reveal behavior and attack patterns, while plant scans help you learn what materials can do.
4. Watch your batteries before they go flat
Once you have a few tools built, battery management becomes part of the routine. Keep spare batteries on hand and set up a charging station at your base so you are not caught with dead gear far from home. Larger items use Power Cores, and solar panels can leave a base offline at night if they are doing all the heavy lifting.
5. Go out with a purpose
Random wandering can turn into wasted time and a messy inventory. Before leaving base, pack food, water, and medical supplies, then make sure your gear is charged and ready. The farther you get, the more specific the resource hunt becomes, so leaving room in your inventory is just as important as what you bring with you.
6. Stock up before you start building
Subnautica 2 plays like a fight against the environment, and that means consumables disappear faster than you expect. Food, water, and other basics help smooth out the rough spots, especially when you are pushing into unfamiliar areas. Once you begin expanding your base, resource demands climb even faster, so organization starts to matter too.
7. Build bases that actually help you survive
A base is more than a place to park yourself. It gives you oxygen, crafting access, room for growable food, power, and eventually vehicle docking bays. The best approach is often to build more than one, especially once you start reaching harsher parts of the map. Small hubs in different biomes can save you a lot of backtracking later.
8. Use beacons so you do not get lost
Beacons are easy to overlook, but they are one of the smartest tools in the game. They make it much easier to mark silver deposits, ruined bases, or any spot you want to revisit later. Since you can rename them and move them when you are done, they are a cheap way to keep your bearings in a world that can blur together fast.
Subnautica 2 is still very much a game about learning through mistakes, but these habits will give you a much safer start. Share your own survival tips in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram.
