Subnautica 2’s food fix is hiding inside a glowing alien pod
The opening hours send players toward Anita Gottschal's blackbox, where a nearby pod gives the enzymes needed to eat local fish and make simple meals.

Subnautica 2 gives you a strange early problem: the fish you catch can be cooked, but your character still reacts with “digestive incompatibility”. Just as me and my friend started playing the game, I can say that the answer is not a workshop upgrade or a better stove. It comes from a glowing alien pod tucked into the opening area. If you want a wider early-game breakdown, the Subnautica 2 guide coverage has more pointers for the first stretch.
How to digest food in Subnautica 2
The game treats this as a biology problem. Subnautica 2’s setup is built around genetic traits spreading between organisms, and that is why the opening tutorial has you interact with a huge glowing pod to adjust to local pressure.
Food works the same way. To handle the creatures on this planet, you need to pick up the digestive enzymes tied to another one of those pods.
- Move through the area and check NOA messages. As you gather resources, your Noetic Adviser, or NOA, will start sending new notes from the orb inside your lifepod.
- Watch for the messages named “Missing Colonists” and “Anita.” The first tells you there are 26 missing colonists, and the second leads you to the blackbox for Anita Gottschal.
- Follow the HUD marker. Once the “Anita” message is open, the blackbox location appears on your interface. It sits roughly 160 meters northeast of the lifepod.
- Search under the glowing plant-fungus structure. The blackbox is beneath a large purple-and-pink growth. Swim to the central pod and interact with it to pick up the alien enzymes.
Once that is done, the food problem goes away. Small fish such as the orange and neon-blue Halfmoon can be grabbed by hand and cooked in the fabricator. You can also make oily salad from fibrous pulp, which comes from cutting plants like the Whip Gorgon with the Survival Multitool.
If you have not made the Multitool yet, you only need 3 titanium, and that can be gathered from the sea floor near the lifepod. After that, the local menu opens up a lot more cleanly.
