Escape the Backrooms’ Level 421 Is Now Open, and It Leads Into a Plastic Ball Pit

The Plastic Mariana update adds 2 new entities and an entity variant, plus fixes for cross-platform lobbies, levels, and menus.

Escape the Backrooms has opened Level 421, also known as Plastic Mariana, across all platforms. The new area takes Wanderers through an abandoned MEG base connected to a children’s hospital before leading them into Bruce’s Discovery Center and a dark ball pit.

The launch follows our earlier Level 421 announcement, which identified August 27, 2026 as the arrival date. The developer confirmed that the update is now available in its Steam announcement.

Plastic Mariana drops players into the darkness

Plastic Mariana has a wonderfully strange setup, at least by Backrooms standards. The level joins a deserted MEG facility to a children’s hospital, then sends players toward Bruce’s Discovery Center. A no-clip zone eventually drops them into the darkness beneath a ball pit.

There is no quiet ending waiting down there, either. The developer warns that players are not alone, leaving groups to work out who is a friend and who is a foe. Alongside Level 421, the update adds 2 new entities and an entity variant.

Several multiplayer fixes arrive with the new level. Lobby codes now work properly across platforms, while problems involving private-lobby access, late-joining players, and crashes on PS5 have also been addressed. Switch 2 receives multiple fixes for joining sessions and controller input, and Xbox players can once again interact with the Arcade Machine needed for the Arcade ending.

Here is the complete changelog for the update.
