Valve’s upcoming Steam Frame headset may come with a free copy of Half-Life: Alyx, but the early evidence points to a promotion for a six-year-old VR game rather than a new Half-Life release. Code strings referencing a “Frame Alyx Promo” have surfaced, although Valve has not confirmed the offer.
Half-Life: Alyx could be the Steam Frame’s early software hook
VR dataminer Brad Lynch found the promotion-related strings while examining Valve’s software. In a post on X, he connected them to a possible giveaway for everyone who purchases the Steam Frame, similar to the offer Valve previously made with its Index headset.

If the promotion goes ahead, it would give Steam Frame buyers one of the best-known VR games in the headset’s library at no extra cost. Valve used a similar approach after Half-Life: Alyx launched, offering the game with Index headset purchases. The catch is obvious for anyone who already owns Alyx, which includes a large part of the PC VR audience.
Another clue comes from Alyx’s development branches. Lynch said internal versions of the game had been updated regularly since early 2025, while the public app only recently began receiving those staged changes in batches. Those updates may be tied to Steam Frame optimization, but that connection remains unconfirmed. Lynch also previously spotted SteamVR components being renamed “Frames” before Valve fully revealed the headset.

Steam Frame is designed to run a user’s entire non-VR library as well, so Valve does not need to rely on one exclusive game to explain the device. Even so, Alyx remains a natural showcase for a new VR headset. Using a six-year-old release as a major software bonus would also underline how few large VR releases have followed Valve’s landmark game.
For now, nothing in the discovery confirms Half-Life 3 or a new entry in the series. Steam Frame buyers may instead receive a familiar Alyx giveaway, assuming Valve decides to make the promotion official and confirms who qualifies.
