CD Projekt Red’s Live-Action Cyberpunk Film Will Tell Its Own Story
Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski said the film will use the Cyberpunk universe without retelling Cyberpunk 2077's plot.
CD Projekt Red’s live-action Cyberpunk film will tell an original story in the franchise’s world rather than adapt the events of Cyberpunk 2077. Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski said as much in a PAP Biznes interview. The film’s specific plot has not been revealed.
Nowakowski said a new story could appeal to existing fans while reaching people who have not been interested in gaming. He pointed to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as an example of how screen stories can bring attention to the games. CD Projekt Red observed increased interest in Cyberpunk 2077 around the anime’s 2022 premiere, and sales stayed above pre-premiere levels in the following months. A second Cyberpunk: Edgerunners series is scheduled to arrive on Netflix on October 20, 2026.
Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 40 million copies, while its Phantom Liberty expansion has passed 15 million. The franchise’s reach gives the film room to tell a story beyond the game without retelling its plot.
CD Projekt Red announced an earlier live-action project with Anonymous Content in 2023. Nowakowski said that agreement expired before the studio formed its partnership with Paramount.
Paramount and CD Projekt Red are working on the film with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, whose credits include the live-action Transformers films, as Deadline reported in early October. Nowakowski said the companies will share more when both sides are ready. His interview did not provide a release date or casting details.
