It’s an exciting time for fans of everyone’s favorite blue hedgehog! Paramount has officially announced that the fourth installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie series will hit theaters on March 19, 2027. This news comes as a delightful surprise to many who have enjoyed the franchise’s previous outings.
The buzz around Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which premiered in December, is hard to ignore. It has now become the highest-grossing film in this beloved franchise, contributing to its impressive milestone of generating over $1 billion globally at the box office. Variety reported on these figures, and it appears that Sonic is indeed racing ahead!
The journey began with Sonic the Hedgehog, released back in February 2020, which raked in $148 million domestically and $319.7 million worldwide. Following closely behind was its sequel, arriving in April 2022, also grossing around $148 million domestically and $319 million globally. With numbers like these, it’s no wonder that excitement builds with every announcement.
As of now, Sonic 3 has earned approximately $218 million domestically and around $422 million globally. The franchise’s success doesn’t stop there; it has also pulled in an additional $180 million from home entertainment rentals and digital purchases, quite a feat for our speedy hero!
All three films were directed by Jeff Fowler, with Jim Carrey returning as Dr. Robotnik alongside Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic. Interestingly enough, Carrey recently expressed his openness to possibly returning for another adventure in this series.
The excitement isn’t limited just to movies; Sega president Shuji Utsumi revealed last month that they are considering launching their own game subscription service—something worth keeping an eye on! He also mentioned that Sega isn’t planning any more mini-consoles at this time.
