Japan’s Ground Forces tree is getting a new top-tier MBT, and this time it comes from Indonesia. Gaijin detailed the Leopard 2RI in an official Steam announcement, saying the tank will join Japan in the Heavy Cavalry major update.

On paper, the Leopard 2RI looks built for aggressive play. Gaijin lists add-on armor, DM53 APFSDS, and high mobility at a glance, while also pointing to thermal imagers and a modern fire control system. The studio says the tank will sit at Rank VIII, and its ammunition selection is meant to be close to the Leopard 2A7’s level.
The armor story is the real hook. The Leopard 2RI is based on the Leopard 2A4, but Indonesia’s modernization work under the Evolution program added armor elements meant to help against shaped-charge rounds. That should make life harder for IFVs, ATGM carriers, and helicopters, even if APFSDS still remains a serious threat.
Gaijin also framed the vehicle as part of Japan’s broader top-tier lineup, which already includes the domestic TKX and Type 10 plus the Thai Oplot-T. The Leopard 2RI adds another style to that mix, and it brings a real-world history that gives the tank a bit more character than a simple stat sheet ever could.
As Gaijin notes, vehicle specifications may still change before the Leopard 2RI is added. Share your thoughts in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, and Instagram for more gaming news.
