Makoto Daito will spend 50 years searching for a place to call home, and STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is surrounding him with a cast that reaches from globe-trotting merchants to wartime performers and powerful yakuza figures. SEGA introduced Snoop Dogg as Orpheus and Tupac as Amaru in its cast reveal on Xbox Wire. Xbox had already planned a 30-minute showcase covering STRANGER THAN HEAVEN’s story, world, and cast for May 6, before this fuller character reveal expanded the game’s lineup.
RGG Studio’s story begins in 1915, when Daito sneaks aboard a ship leaving San Francisco for Japan after facing severe discrimination in the United States. Born to an American father and a Japanese mother, he will move through five cities and five eras before the story reaches 1965.
STRANGER THAN HEAVEN will launch on January 15, 2027, for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Xbox Cloud. It will support Xbox Play Anywhere and will be available through Xbox Game Pass.
The ship brings Daito his first allies
Yu Shirota portrays Daito, whose dangerous voyage introduces him to two people who will change his life. Snoop Dogg plays Orpheus, a globe-trotting merchant who discovers the stowaway and teaches him about the harsh realities of life in Japan. Orpheus also recognizes Daito’s talent for music.
Dean Fujioka plays Yu Shinjo, a half-Japanese, half-British man who is also trying to escape persecution and begin again in Japan. Shinjo meets Daito aboard the ship, and the two agree to survive together. His cool-headed approach gives Daito a sharp contrast during the early part of the journey.
Music becomes another important thread in Daito’s life. Satoshi Fujihara portrays Takashi, Daito’s sworn brother and a gifted pianist who rediscovers his passion after Daito notices his ability. Tori Kelly plays Suzy Day, a talented singer whose rise through show business begins after she meets Daito.
Merchants, performers and power brokers surround Daito
The cast also reaches into the communities Daito encounters across Japan. Akio Otsuka portrays Heigo Yashima, a wealthy merchant and boss in Kokura, while Moeka Hoshi plays Tae Matsumoto, a café waitress who is also a yakuza’s mistress. Tokuma Nishioka plays Kiyoshi Otsuru, a stylish older man with an unmistakable air of authority.
Other characters point to the changing places and eras in Daito’s path. Ado portrays Keiko Shirai, the diva of wartime Osaka. Cordell Broadus plays the Veiled Stranger, a man stationed in postwar Japan. Daisuke Shiba portrays Kimura, an easygoing nightclub worker in Kamurocho.
Legacy performers take on two unusual roles
Genzo Iwaki, the influential big boss of Kure, will be brought to life through the likeness of the late Bunta Sugawara. SEGA received formal consent from Sugawara’s family, while Toei Company provided archival footage and photographs that RGG Studio used to craft the character’s design. Takashi Ukaji provides Genzo’s voice and had a close connection with Sugawara.
Tupac’s appearance as Amaru was created with permission and ongoing supervision from his estate, Amaru Entertainment. Amaru is a man hiding in Japan, and RGG Studio said it worked closely with the estate on his character design using archival footage and photographs without AI. More information about the role will arrive later.
The remaining cast includes Takashi Ukaji as Tadashi Hataoka, a violent yakuza from Kokura, Takaya Kuroda as the quiet craftsman Takeo Godai, Kouhei Tsuji as Daito’s dependable sworn brother Suekichi, and Yasukaze Motomiya as Tetsuya Hama, a young yakuza serving as Iwaki’s right-hand man.
