Stranger Than Heaven Lets Players Build Songs From Combat Sounds
A three-hour preview spans parts of Makoto's 1915, 1929, and 1943 story, including open-world work and side activities in Kokura.

Stranger Than Heaven folds music-making into its brawls: colorful musical sounds appear during fights, where Makoto Daito can collect them for later song arrangements. A three-hour DualShockers hands-on preview covered selected sections set in 1915, 1929, and 1943, showing how the feature fits a story about Makoto trying to build a life in Japan.
RGG Studio’s Like a Dragon prequel follows Makoto, a Japanese-American man who escapes discrimination in 1915 San Francisco for his mother’s homeland. Japan brings its own hardships. In Kokura, Makoto meets Tae Matsumoto and finds work around the industrial port for Orpheus and Heigo Yashima.
Combat sounds feed into song creation
Sounds appear as colorful bubbles during fights, and Makoto can collect them for later music-making with composers. Players can mix those sounds with rhythms and instruments to create songs, including arrangements based on “And Should I Sing of Love.” The system gives music a place in the action as well as the story.
Kokura pairs open-world activities with tough fights
Much of Kokura is open to explore. Makoto can take side jobs, eat local food, buy equipment, and learn to roll cigarettes or play blackjack with Orpheus’s crew. Those quieter activities sit alongside the game’s close-quarters combat, which covers both armed and unarmed opponents.
Several areas also hide unusually tough hostile men who demand patience and precision to defeat. Earlier footage had already shown Makoto controlling each side independently, including blocking with one hand while attacking with the other, in the Act 1 trailer.
The 1943 Minami section had a rough edge in the preview build. Certain doorways sent Makoto through the level geometry or back to the section’s starting area, a bug observed in that build rather than evidence of how the game will run at launch.
Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled to launch on January 15, 2027, for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud, PlayStation 5, and Steam, with Game Pass availability. The January 15 release date was confirmed alongside the game’s earlier Act 1 footage.
