Railbreak DX is now available on Xbox Series X|S, giving the original on-rails shooter a larger cast, upgraded visuals, new modes, and a fresh set of ways to chase high scores. The $24.99 release also supports Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Streaming through the Xbox store page.
Score-focused guidance in the Xbox Wire announcement points players toward hidden weapons, careful target selection, and survivor-specific trade-offs. Railbreak DX now features 18 playable survivors, compared with 9 in the original game, and optional 2-player co-op works across the full experience.
Story Mode Rewards Careful Searching
Story mode follows detective Lydia Daniels and mercenary Hank through Cypress Ridge during a zombie outbreak. The city is packed with breakable objects, supplies, and weapons that can change how a run plays out. Story mode is also the only place where these special weapons can be found in the environment, so players should watch the scenery instead of firing at everything that moves.
One particularly easy-to-miss weapon appears in Act IV. While passing through the park, check the benches for a magnum that deals far more damage than the standard handgun. The camera handles movement automatically, which makes quick reactions and careful observation especially important when a weapon is tucked into the scenery.
Choose Survivors Around Their Trade-Offs
Every survivor brings a different loadout, firing pattern, damage profile, and set of quirks. Michael is built for players who want protection from status effects. Poison and Bleed cannot affect him, but his shotgun consumes ammunition quickly, which can become a serious problem on higher difficulties.
Rin offers a riskier route to a better score. Her special handgun can freeze enemies with ice bullets, although her damage falls sharply when shots miss the head. Her katana adds another layer to the choice. Hitting an enemy with its sword beam activates a brief state that raises damage and score potential, but it also triggers a random negative condition. Rin cannot dismember zombies either, leaving accuracy as her main path to staying alive.
How to Build a Higher Score
Precision pays better than panic fire. Headshots award extra damage and points, while shooting limbs can remove an arm or leg from many normal zombies. That cuts down their attacks and movement while keeping ammunition focused on useful targets.
Grenades are best saved for emergencies because they provide only a small number of points. Civilian casualties carry a harsher cost, reducing health when an innocent person is hit. Grenades and explosions from special infected enemies are exceptions, so players can use those crowd-clearing effects without receiving the same penalty.
Enemies such as Boom Boom and Kunoichi should be high-priority targets when a group starts to build up. Taking them out can trigger an explosion that clears nearby threats, creating room to keep the score multiplier alive.
More Ways to Play Railbreak DX
Beyond Story mode, Railbreak DX includes Score Attack, the escalating Onslaught mode, and Glitch Gauntlet, a roguelike mode built around unpredictable effects. A practice mode provides unlimited health and removes barriers, giving players room to learn each survivor’s tools before chasing a serious run.
The game also lets players mix the classic undead with the dinosaurs from DINOBREAK. You can face zombies, dinosaurs, or both enemy types together, while the Unreal Engine 5 presentation adds improved animations, fully animated weapons, and ray tracing. Xbox Play Anywhere carries progress and achievements to PC and handheld play, and cloud streaming lets players start without downloading the game.
The original legacy Railbreak title is scheduled to leave individual direct sale during September 2026, while Railbreak DX is positioned as the long-term expanded version.
