Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux Get Free Next-Gen Upgrade Dates

The free upgrades arrive on PC October 22 and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on October 29, adding true 4K at 60 FPS or upscaled 4K at 120 FPS on consoles alongside platform-specific features.

Free current-console upgrades for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux will arrive on PC on October 22, 2026, followed by PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on October 29. Existing owners will receive the updates at no additional cost, while Deep Silver has also confirmed that the Metro franchise has surpassed 50 million copies sold worldwide since the first game debuted in 2010.

Owners on Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S are included in the free-upgrade program. The two games are already playable on current consoles through backward compatibility, but these releases add native support for the newer hardware rather than simply leaving the older editions to carry the load.

Neither game is being presented as a remake or remaster. The Redux presentation will remain intact while the upgrades add refreshed textures, lighting, shadows, animations, audio, environmental detail, higher-quality particle effects, hardware tessellation, and runtime displacement. Community-requested fixes and quality-of-life improvements are also part of the update.

Resolution and platform features

Console players will be able to choose between true 4K at 60 FPS and upscaled 4K at 120 FPS, with compatible display hardware required for the higher frame-rate option. The PC versions will support 4K resolution with uncapped frame rates. PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S will receive native versions, with PSSR support on PlayStation 5 Pro and TSR upscaling plus anti-aliasing improvements on Xbox Series X.

PlayStation players will get DualSense Adaptive Triggers and Power Saver Mode. Xbox versions will support Impulse Triggers and Power Optimized Mode. Spatial Audio is also coming to Xbox platforms and PC, while the PC update adds DLSS. The announcement lists Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox handheld support as additional parts of the rollout.

The schedule gives a concrete answer to the ESRB listing for Metro 2033 Redux and the listing for Metro: Last Light Redux, which recently named PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for both games. Both ratings carry an M for Mature 17+ rating and note in-game purchases. Metro 2033 Redux is listed for blood, sexual themes, strong language, drug use, and violence, while Metro: Last Light Redux is listed for blood, intense violence, nudity, sexual content, strong language, and the use of drugs and alcohol.

The October 29 console release will arrive ahead of Metro 2039, which is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 on February 4, 2027. For owners who already have both Redux releases installed, the real question is whether the higher frame-rate ceiling and hardware-specific features will make another trip through the tunnels worthwhile.
