GTA 6’s Extended Look Led Netflix’s Weekly Chart With 31.1 Million Views

The 27-minute presentation led Netflix's weekly chart after a six-hour exclusive window, ranked No. 1 in 87 of the 93 countries it tracks, and outpaced the service's top movie and TV show.

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look drew 31.1 million views during Netflix’s four-day tracking window from August 27 through August 30, making it the most-watched title across the service that week and putting it at the top of Netflix’s English-language film list. The 27-minute presentation also ranked No. 1 in 87 of the 93 countries Netflix tracks, giving Rockstar’s next open-world crime game a remarkably broad audience before its planned November 19, 2026 release.

Netflix categorized the presentation as a movie. Its 31.1 million views put it ahead of The Whisper Man, which recorded 23.2 million views after premiering on August 28, and Death of the Pastor’s Wife, the week’s most-watched TV show with 19 million views.

That result still fell short of Netflix’s biggest English-language debut. Stranger Things season 5 holds that record with 59.6 million views in its first week, but GTA 6’s performance places a game presentation alongside the platform’s largest scripted and unscripted releases.

Netflix and YouTube count views differently

Netflix totals the hours watched and divides that number by the runtime of a movie or show. With the extended look running for about 27 minutes, 31.1 million Netflix views represent roughly 14 million hours of viewing during the tracking period.

Rockstar premiered the extended look on Netflix at 3 p.m. EDT on August 27. Watching the first showing required an active subscription, and the presentation remained exclusive to Netflix for six hours before becoming available for free at 9 p.m. EDT on Rockstar Games’ YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI website. The short window gave Netflix the first release opportunity without keeping the free online launch off the internet for days, a rollout detailed in our Netflix premiere coverage.

YouTube uses a different calculation, so its figures are not direct equivalents to Netflix’s total. The free extended-look upload had 17 million total views, leaving Netflix’s 31.1 million at nearly twice that figure across the first four days. GTA 6 Trailer 2 reached 19 million views within a few hours on YouTube, where a view is counted when someone starts the video. That trailer was also available without a subscription or sign-in, unlike the extended look’s initial Netflix showing.

Take-Two Interactive has not disclosed what it received from the Netflix arrangement, so the public numbers cannot show how much money the deal generated. They do show the reach Netflix secured from a short window around a high-profile game reveal.

A crash hit Netflix at one point as viewers tried to watch the extended look, but the presentation still delivered nearly half an hour focused on Jason and Lucia and their lives in Vice City.

Netflix also highlighted that all of the footage was captured in-game on PlayStation 5. The service framed the sequel’s challenge by describing Grand Theft Auto V as the biggest entertainment launch of all time.

The presentation arrived after several alleged Grand Theft Auto VI leaks. Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive are working with Microsoft and Discord on legal action against the person behind the alleged leaks, as detailed in our report on Xbox’s response.
