Grand Theft Auto VI’s Extended Look Ran Smoothly on Netflix, Then Twitch Streams Went Black
Twitch reported problems across its website, chat, and video systems shortly after Rockstar's presentation aired.
Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look made it through its Netflix premiere on August 27, but Twitch began failing about an hour later, leaving viewers with error pages, black video windows, and no way to watch many streamers react in real time.
The presentation began on Netflix at 3 p.m. EDT and provided the first extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay. Netflix handled the rush, but Twitch had a much rougher afternoon once viewers turned to streamers for live analysis.
Twitch streams stopped working while chat stayed online
Twitch’s homepage returned an error message, while the Browse section still displayed categories. Opening individual streams was another story, with many channels showing permanent black screens instead of video.
Chat continued working for some viewers who already had streams open, creating a particularly cursed combination of live conversation with no live footage. People could still talk about what they were watching, even when the video itself had vanished.
About 30 minutes after the outage began, Twitch pages started loading intermittently. Not every stream returned at once, and Twitch’s status page continued to show major problems affecting the website, chat, and video systems.
TwitchSupport acknowledged the disruption in a post on X, saying, “We are aware of issues impacting several areas of our site. Our teams are working to resolve these.”

The timing was especially awkward for anyone without a Netflix subscription. Rockstar’s Netflix premiere schedule placed the free release on the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI website at 9 p.m. EDT, six hours after the first showing.
Until that free release arrived, viewers without Netflix had few options beyond watching someone else’s stream or searching for an unauthorized upload. With Grand Theft Auto VI among the biggest subjects on Twitch that day, the video outage landed at about the worst possible moment for anyone hoping to watch the presentation through a streamer.
