Gears of War: E-Day Campaign Will Make Kalona’s Fall Personal

The Coalition detailed Vraahk, smarter Locust enemies, optional rescues, and campaign weapon modding during the Official Xbox Podcast.

Gears of War: E-Day will put players inside Kalona as the Locust invasion turns a familiar city into a desperate fight for survival. The campaign will follow soldiers and civilians through the early stages of Emergence Day, with the city itself changing as the crisis grows.

In the latest episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, Creative Director Matt Searcy and Campaign Design Director Raul Figueroa discussed how the campaign will balance horror, loss, and the brotherhood holding people together. The setting gives the team room to show what Sera looked like before it became the ruined world seen throughout the earlier games.

That contrast begins with Vraahk, a Blight commander injured during the Lambent War. His goal is simple, according to the developers, to wipe out humanity. The story trailer introduced him alongside the Scorched Legion, elite Locust units marked by spikes and deliberate self-mutilation that carry his brutal identity into encounters beyond the main villain.

Kalona will change as the invasion spreads

Kalona was built as a complete city rather than a collection of disconnected combat arenas. Landmarks and familiar locations will evolve as the campaign moves forward, giving players a clearer sense of what is being lost. The story will also follow the wider Bravo Squad and other soldiers caught in the same crisis, including a mayor and a colonel whose opposing views add tension inside the city’s leadership.

The campaign will remain linear overall, but several sections will open up a few blocks at a time. Players will choose how to reach their next mission and may find another squad under attack or a family trapped inside a building. Helping them can provide narrative rewards, while hard cases and other optional objectives will add progression and extra environmental storytelling.

Weapon modding will also appear in the campaign for the first time. Systems familiar from the game’s Horde content will feed into the story, giving players another reason to search beyond the most direct route instead of treating every side street as decoration.

The Locust are learning the same tricks as the player

Movement is expanding on both sides of the fight. Players will be able to jump, climb, and use vehicles and debris to create new angles, but Locust enemies can use those options too. A grenadier might climb onto a truck, throw smoke between itself and the player, then push through the cover with a Gnasher at close range.

Enemy encounters will also escalate as the campaign progresses. Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago, and the people of Kalona will face familiar enemy types for the first time, moving from early encounters with Wretches and Drones toward armored Brumaks and the growing realization that the attack is a full-scale underground invasion.

Gears of War: E-Day will launch on October 6, 2026, with early access beginning October 1. Its campaign will use the first days of the Locust war to make every rescued civilian, damaged landmark, and new enemy feel connected to the fall of one city.

Kalona’s story gives E-Day a more personal route into the series’ origin, and we want to know whether that approach works for you. Share your thoughts in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram, Steam, and Telegram.
