A reported $500 million development cost for Gears of War: E-Day puts reports of a canceled PS5 version back in focus. The figure may cover more than the game itself, leaving the production budget unclear.
Kotaku’s reporting cited sources who put the shooter’s development cost at $500 million. Chris Dring backed the figure, while Jez Corden said his sources agreed on the amount but differed over how much belonged to E-Day versus The Coalition’s wider operations and ATG contributions.
Yes, so this, from what I'm told, is very true. $500 million. Unbelievable. https://t.co/XSSSt98lFK

they aint wrong on the figure, but seems to be some disagreement among my sources how that figure was allocated between e-day and general tc operations/atg contributions.

Reports said the PS5 version was close to finished before cancellation, but an unclear game-only cost leaves no basis for calculating how much a PlayStation release would have needed to recoup.
Alinea Analytics’ more recent estimate put E-Day sales at around 311,000 copies, with most players accessing the game through Xbox Game Pass. An October 9 estimate put Xbox and Steam purchases at 230,000 copies, split between 62,000 Xbox purchases, including console and PC, and 168,000 on Steam. It also counted 1.7 million Game Pass players. The earlier figures are detailed in the October 9 sales estimate. Neither estimate establishes how many additional buyers a PS5 release might have brought in.
In its October 9 analysis, Alinea Analytics estimated gross revenue at about $37 million across Xbox and Steam, allocating 74.6% to Xbox and 25.4% to Steam. Since the total includes Steam, it is not an Xbox-console-only figure. Alinea separately estimated more than 722,000 paid Premium Edition upgrades. The 1.7 million Game Pass player count is not a count of additional copies sold, and the analysis did not clarify whether, or how, Game Pass subscription revenue was allocated to E-Day. Gross revenue does not establish profitability or show how much of a potentially wider development cost has been recouped.
