Gears of War: E-Day Multiplayer Has the Right Feel, but Horde: Siege Raises Questions

A preview session found smoother movement and familiar weapons, though the new three-team extraction format may not satisfy every Horde fan.

Gears of War: E-Day still looks like a proper return to the series’ cover-based roots, but its multiplayer preview left some questions unanswered. A hands-on preview published by Insider Gaming covered both the new Horde: Siege mode and competitive multiplayer.

The Coalition is taking the game back to the beginning of the Locust war. That setting brings familiar weapons and brutal combat into a much earlier period of the franchise, where some equipment does not yet work exactly as players may expect. The Lancer, for example, predates the standard chainsaw attachment, which can make an attempted chainsaw attack end with an awkward melee hit instead.

A Familiar Gears Foundation

The core combat appears to remain firmly rooted in the series’ established formula. Players move between cover, choose firing angles, and punish Locust enemies who expose themselves. The preview found that the new slide mechanic made movement feel smoother without causing problems during the session.

That balance matters because Gears of War: E-Day is not built around sprinting directly into every fight. Careful positioning remains important, whether the player is using a pistol at close range or lining up a shot with a sniper rifle. The violence is still very much part of the package, too, with the kind of explosive executions and heavy gunplay associated with the franchise.

The game will also be the first mainline Gears title to launch day one on Xbox Series X|S. After Gears of War: Reloaded brought the franchise to PlayStation, E-Day’s return to first-party Xbox exclusivity places extra pressure on the new release to bring the series back into focus.

Horde: Siege Takes a Different Route

Horde: Siege is the biggest multiplayer question mark. Instead of using the traditional round-by-round structure, the mode puts three teams of four players into the same operation. Each group works toward its objectives before trying to extract safely.

That format gives Horde a more active flow, but it also moves away from the structure that made the older mode easy to understand and repeat. The preview found enjoyable elements in the new design, yet it did not fully recreate the appeal of classic Horde.

The concern is familiar to anyone who felt that Gears 5‘s Hive mode lost some of the series’ multiplayer identity over time. Horde: Siege may offer a fresh reason to return, but its longer-term appeal will depend on how well the objectives, team roles, and extraction phase hold up across repeated matches.

PvP Still Needs to Make Its Case

Competitive multiplayer made a less forceful impression. The session found the PvP action functional without offering a clear reason for longtime fans to switch from the modes they already know. That does not mean the system is broken, but it leaves the multiplayer portion with more to prove before launch.

There is still time for The Coalition to respond. The game’s open beta will give a much larger group of players a chance to try the multiplayer modes before release. The first multiplayer test is scheduled to begin on August 6, while a dedicated multiplayer reveal is scheduled for July 30 at 9 a.m. ET.

Gears of War: E-Day has the combat basics in place. The movement feels more fluid, the cover system still works, and the setting gives the weapons and story a clear identity. Horde: Siege and PvP, however, will need to show that they can keep players coming back rather than simply provide a different version of what came before.

The multiplayer beta should provide a clearer picture of how these modes perform with a wider player base. Share your thoughts on Horde: Siege and the direction of E-Day in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, and Instagram.
