BeamNG.drive 0.39 Gives Its Crashes a Much Better Night Sky

The update adds dynamic ambient lighting, HDR support, a redesigned interface, new vehicle physics, and the Cherrier Ardente.

BeamNG.drive has reached version 0.39, and the driving sandbox now has a much more detailed visual system for everything from daytime crashes to late-night drives. The update adds more stable shadows, HDR output on Vulkan and Direct3D 12, physically correct light attenuation, and dynamic ambient lighting.

The biggest changes are part of what the official version 0.39 announcement calls the game’s biggest update yet. BeamNG.drive’s skies now use real astronomical values, with Milky Way rendering and a constellation database that responds to latitude, longitude, date, and time of day.

That means the game can now deliver a more convincing night drive before the car inevitably meets a fence at an irresponsible speed. Volumetric clouds, improved vehicle lights, and better shadow behavior should also make the game’s large collection of crashes look more grounded.

Version 0.39 also gives the interface a long-overdue pass. The pause menu has been redesigned, gamepad support has been improved, and replays now use a revamped UI. The new interface is more moddable than the previous one, which should give the community more room to customize the experience.

Vehicle simulation received attention too. The update adds a new aerodynamic physics system, while map work includes various improvements and an all-gravel Rally Loop. A freeroam tutorial is also included for players who want a gentler introduction to BeamNG.drive’s physics sandbox.

The new car is the Cherrier Ardente, a contemporary model with a sporty interior. The update also brings an overhauled photo mode, memory optimizations, and updated ambient audio.

BeamNG.drive has been in early access for 11 years and originally came through Steam Greenlight. A PS5 version is still in development, while the team has promised more updates for the PC version.

Version 0.39 gives BeamNG.drive’s crashes, cars, and night drives plenty of new visual detail. Tell us what you think of the overhaul in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, and Instagram.
