A New Far Cry Open-World Game Is in Development Alongside Far Cry 7

The project, reportedly codenamed Kodiak, is said to have grown from the cancelled Alaskan multiplayer extraction shooter known as Maverick.

Ubisoft reportedly has another Far Cry project in development, and it is being worked on alongside the next mainline game in the series.

According to Insider Gaming’s report, the new open-world title is codenamed Kodiak and has completed its conceptualisation phase. The report describes it as a “really ambitious” project, although Ubisoft has not officially announced it.

Kodiak is reportedly being developed at the same time as Blackbird, the project widely understood to be Far Cry 7. That game is currently expected to be the next entry players see from the franchise.

Far Cry’s cancelled extraction shooter may live on

The report also claims Ubisoft cancelled Maverick, a multiplayer project that had been described as an extraction shooter. Maverick was reportedly set in the Alaskan wilderness, where players would have contended with harsh weather, wildlife, and other players. The project was also rumored to use a PvPvE structure, combining player-versus-player and player-versus-environment encounters.

Kodiak is said to be built on Maverick’s foundations, with the extraction focus reportedly scrapped as development continued under the newer codename. That could mean the project retains some of Maverick’s multiplayer ideas, although details remain unconfirmed.

The report describes Kodiak as focused on “player interactions” and “player-driven stories,” but there is no confirmed information about its setting, gameplay systems, platforms, or release date.

Blackbird appears to be further along and could arrive before Kodiak. It is reportedly being developed by Ubisoft’s Vantage Studios alongside Kodiak, while the newer project is still several years away from release. Insider Gaming also reported that Charlie Guillemot referred to Blackbird as “Act One” during an internal interview at Vantage Studios, though the significance of that wording is unclear.

These plans follow Ubisoft’s broad restructuring efforts, which have affected several projects across the publisher. For now, the future of Far Cry includes at least two open-world games in development, while the franchise’s reported extraction shooter has been cancelled.
