Former Rockstar Director Says AI Could Narrow GTA 6’s Console-PC Gap

Obbe Vermeij believes an AI-assisted copy of the PS5 version could threaten sales, though Rockstar has announced no PC release date.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on Nov. 19, 2026, but Rockstar has not announced a PC release. Former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij believes generative AI could give Rockstar a reason to bring the PC version closer to the console launch: a third party might adapt the PS5 game for PC and take sales from an official port.

In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Vermeij said AI could help someone convert the PS5 version for PC. He expected an unofficial version to fall short of Rockstar’s work, but said it could still hurt sales. Take-Two could turn to lawyers, he noted, though he questioned whether AI could do a particularly good job with a game on GTA 6’s scale.

Vermeij left Rockstar in 2009 and made clear he does not know what the studio is considering now. A shorter gap between console and PC is his assessment of one possible response, not a confirmed change to Rockstar’s plans.

A faster PC launch would differ from Grand Theft Auto V, which reached PC in April 2015, nearly two years after its September 2013 console debut. Rockstar’s modding guidelines also prohibit modifying its games to run on platforms where they have not been officially released. That rule applies to community projects, so it does not indicate when Rockstar might release an official PC version.

Rockstar’s reported answer on generative AI concerned the single-player game’s development, a separate issue from outsiders attempting an unofficial PC version. GTA Online remains a separate unknown.
