Rockstar Says GTA 6 Will Have No Microtransactions or Generative AI, But GTA Online Is Still Unknown
Rob Nelson reportedly answered both questions with "no" for GTA 6's single-player game, while Rockstar has not detailed how a future GTA Online mode will work.

Rockstar Games has reportedly answered two questions about the single-player portion of GTA 6 with a single word: no. During a Kinda Funny Games preview at Rockstar Games’ headquarters in Edinburgh, Andy Cortez and Greg Miller recounted asking Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson whether the game would include microtransactions and whether generative AI had been used during development. When asked directly about AI, Nelson answered, “No.” The microtransaction question received the same answer.
The comments concern the single-player game, where players reportedly will not be able to spend real-world money. They do not explain whether a future version of GTA Online will follow the same rule. Rockstar has not publicly described that online mode’s launch timing, features, or payment systems.
GTA Online could use a separate payment system
That is where the Shark Card question enters. GTA Online already uses Shark Cards for optional currency purchases, so a separate online product could take a different approach from the single-player game. Rockstar has not confirmed Shark Cards, a battle pass, or any other monetization system for GTA 6 Online. For now, each remains a possibility rather than an announced feature.
GTA 6 remains scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026. The comments followed the August 27 Extended Look, which provided nearly 30 minutes of gameplay and introduced a wider audience to Rockstar’s upcoming open-world game.
The lack of a confirmed online plan also leaves plenty of room between the main game’s release and its multiplayer counterpart. Rockstar has handled separate launches before. GTA Online followed GTA V after a 2-week wait, while Red Dead Redemption 2’s online mode opened in beta about a month after release and reached its full launch roughly 1.5 years later.
Those examples show that GTA 6’s single-player and online components do not have to arrive together. Until Rockstar provides more details, the reported “no” answers should be read as applying to GTA 6’s single-player experience, not as a promise about the long-term structure of GTA Online.
