Borderlands Series Passes 100 Million Sales Ahead of More Borderlands 4 Content in 2027
Gearbox and 2K Foundations will also match donations to The Hunt, a community fundraiser starting November 6.

The Borderlands franchise has passed 100 million units sold, and Gearbox is working on more Borderlands 4 content for 2027. The November 2 announcement covers a series that began with the original Borderlands in 2009, not Borderlands 4 alone.
Before Borderlands 4 launched, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford told Insider Gaming at Gamescom in August 2025 that the series would pass 100 million units “with this launch, easy.” He also recalled struggling to draw attention to the original Borderlands at Gamescom, when some people predicted the game would not work.
Gearbox announced the milestone more than a year after Borderlands 4’s release, but did not say when it was reached. The announcement does not establish whether Pitchford’s launch prediction was correct.
Gearbox says it has finished the game’s first-year roadmap, which brought two Story Packs, five Bounty Packs, two new Vault Hunters and additional activities and features. In its message to the community, the studio said Weekly Activity refreshes and Community Challenges will continue while it works on next year’s content.
The October 22 Version 1.11 update fixed progression issues in Story Pack 2 and adjusted several Vault Hunters. Gearbox has not specified what form the 2027 content will take, but says it is also considering the future of the wider franchise and listening to feedback about its characters and stories.
The Hunt returns November 6
Borderlands players will take part in The Hunt, a community fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, starting November 6. Gearbox and 2K Foundations will match donations dollar for dollar up to what the announcement describes as last year’s record amount.
An earlier Hunt in 2026 raised a record $118,995.80 for St. Jude. Gearbox says the matching campaign could bring the total raised to more than $230,000.
