Physical copies made up 35% of Marvel’s Wolverine‘s launch sales, while the share reached 51% in Europe. GSD data published by The Game Business also show a sharp divide between countries. Analyst Joost van Dreunen, speaking to the outlet, said, “People have a need to collect,” adding that physical sales remain “incredibly relevant” to consumers even as the industry moves on.
In the UK, two-thirds of sales were digital. France leaned the other way, with more than two-thirds of sales coming from boxed copies.
Ampere also estimated that Marvel’s Wolverine sold around 2.16 million units in September, making it the second-best-selling PS5 game that month behind EA Sports FC 27. Elsewhere, physical copies accounted for more than 45% of Silent Hill: Townfall sales, 36% of The Blood of Dawnwalker sales on PS5, and 30% of Onimusha: Way of the Sword sales.
Sony’s plan would end disc production for PS5 games launching after January 2028, though recent comments from Nippon Ichi Software president Kenzo Saruhashi left room for the discussion to change.
