Marvel’s Wolverine is currently sitting at 77 on Metacritic as reviews arrive ahead of its scheduled September 15, 2026, release. Based on just over 100 evaluations, Insomniac’s PS5 adventure has landed near the bottom of Sony’s first-party results for the generation, even though a 77 remains a generally favorable score.
Sony’s first-party releases have regularly reached the high 80s and 90s, which makes Wolverine’s position unusual for a major Insomniac project. The comparison covers major studios owned by Sony rather than every game published by the company, and the current result is especially visible during a relatively limited first-party single-player schedule.
Wolverine lands near the bottom of Sony’s PS5 lineup
Concord remains lower at 62, while Days Gone Remastered sits just above Wolverine at 78. Other Sony-owned studio releases in the comparison include Astro Bot and God of War Ragnarök at 94, along with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 at 90.
A broader comparison of Sony-published exclusives also places games from outside that studio group, including Destruction AllStars and God of War: Sons of Sparta, below Wolverine. The result leaves Insomniac’s new game among the lowest-rated Sony-owned studio releases on PS5, despite a score most players would still view as positive.
Insomniac’s 77 breaks a strong review run
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 earned a 90 in 2023, and Insomniac had not produced a game below 85 across the generation before Wolverine arrived. The new average therefore represents a 13-point drop from Spider-Man 2 and marks a clear break from the studio’s recent review record. It also gives Insomniac its lowest rating for an original game since Song of the Deep in 2016.
Reviews have credited Marvel’s Wolverine with solid combat foundations and good performances from its lead characters. The main complaints focus on a story that does not fully come together, combat that reaches its strongest ideas too early, and a smaller scope than recent first-party PlayStation releases. The adventure runs for roughly 10 to 15 hours, leaving less room for its systems to develop across the full experience.
A two-hour hands-on preview highlighted Logan’s combat, his strained relationship with Team X, and the move into Madripoor. Those foundations remain a clear part of the game’s appeal, but the current reviews suggest they do not expand enough to sustain the entire adventure.
Insomniac had already reached gold status ahead of the September launch, so the review average now gives players another way to judge the upcoming release. The score could still move as more evaluations arrive, but Wolverine is starting from a much tougher position than most recent Sony first-party projects.
Marvel’s Wolverine remains scheduled to launch exclusively on PS5 on September 15, 2026. Its current Metacritic score gives prospective buyers a clearer picture than the early preview did. The game appears to offer a capable Wolverine power fantasy without matching the breadth or staying power associated with Insomniac’s best work.
