Phoenix Cyclops will be the first Year 1 character added to MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls. The announcement came during the game’s San Diego Comic-Con panel and was detailed in a PlayStation Blog announcement.
This version of Scott Summers is based on his Phoenix Five appearance from Avengers vs. X-Men. His design combines Cyclops’ familiar yellow-and-blue gear with the cosmic power of the Phoenix Force, giving the X-Men leader a fiery new look for the 4v4 fighter.
Phoenix Cyclops will use his signature Optic Blasts alongside close-range attacks. The team has not yet shared a full breakdown of his moves, so more details about his fighting style will arrive in a later update. Ray Chase provides the character’s voice.
A new opening film brings the cast to life
The game also received a new opening film inspired by classic fighting-game intros and early-2000s anime openings. Japanese animation studio Sanzigen handled the opening and the cinematic scenes shown throughout Episode Mode, using its 2.5D animation style for the game’s Marvel cast.
The theme song features Keiko Terada of SHOW-YA and mayu of NEMOPHILA. Kanata Okajima wrote the lyrics, while MEG (MEGMETAL) handled composition and arrangement. Sanzigen’s Daisuke Suzuki directed the animation.
Wolverine costume arrives September 1
A separate collaboration with Insomniac Games will add the Wolverine Battle Reborn Suit on September 1, 2026. Every player will be able to download the costume at no additional cost.
The game’s Ultimate Edition will also include a costume based on the Advanced Suit 2.0 from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The development team said it plans to add more costumes after launch.
Open Beta begins July 24
The open beta will run from July 24 through July 26, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and PC. The test will be available to everyone, and its roster has grown from the originally planned 15 characters with the addition of Green Goblin.
The beta will be the last free chance to play before MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls launches on August 6, 2026. A PlayStation account and an internet connection are required to participate.
