Rockstar Explains Why Grand Theft Auto VI Won’t Chase Short-Lived Real-World Events
Rob Nelson said development began in 2015, with most of the team moving onto the project after Red Dead Redemption 2 released in 2018.
Grand Theft Auto VI will not treat every real-world event as a story opportunity. Rockstar Games is taking a more careful approach because topical ideas can age before a game with such a long production cycle reaches players.
Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson discussed that approach in an interview with Trois Couleurs. He explained that the game began development in 2015, while most of the team moved onto the project after Red Dead Redemption 2 released in 2018.
That timeline creates a problem for stories built around a specific moment. By the time an idea moves through writing, casting, filming, and implementation, the real-world event behind it may have changed or lost its relevance. “We have to be very careful about what ideas we choose to put in there,” Nelson said.
Grand Theft Auto VI will still satirize modern life
Rockstar is not abandoning commentary on contemporary culture. Nelson said there will always be ridiculous situations and behaviors for the studio to satirize, but each idea has to fit the story and the world around it. The goal is to choose material that remains understandable years after the original event has faded from public attention.
That philosophy fits the scale of the project. Nelson previously said one run through a non-final build took 80 hours, including main-story content and optional objectives, though the figure was not a final completion estimate. The earlier comments are covered in Nelson’s 80-hour Grand Theft Auto VI playthrough.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a PC version planned for later. Rockstar’s decision to avoid overly topical plot points should give the game more room to tell a story that can outlast the news cycle that inspired it.
