One GTA 6 Playthrough Took a Rockstar Developer 80 Hours
Rob Nelson's non-final-build run included main-story content and optional objectives, including a quest with narrative consequences.

One playthrough of Grand Theft Auto VI took Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson 80 hours, offering an early idea of how long a story-focused run might take. It was not presented as an official completion-time estimate. Nelson used a non-final build in February 2026, and the run covered portions of the main campaign alongside optional side content.
Nelson discussed the game’s development in The New York Times interview. At least one optional quest included in the run carried consequences for the story, giving the 80 hours more scope than a straightforward campaign-only session.
That figure should not be treated as a guaranteed length for every player. Nelson’s run included only some of GTA 6’s side content, while completion times can vary depending on how much optional content someone pursues. Players who explore more of the game’s activities could take considerably longer.
What Rob Nelson’s GTA 6 playthrough included
Nelson said he hopes players will slow down and spend time with Jason and Lucia instead of rushing from one mission to the next. “I hope that there will be people that want to get up, have a cup of coffee, shower, get dressed, go out for a little exercise,” he said in the interview.
Those everyday activities sit alongside the larger criminal story. Players can perform small actions such as eating an apple, opening a refrigerator, and drinking a smoothie. The smoothie temporarily increases health, giving these routine behaviors a gameplay effect rather than leaving them as simple decoration.
Rockstar has also said that GTA 6’s map is three times larger than the map in Red Dead Redemption 2. A larger world does not automatically translate into a longer campaign, but it provides more room for optional encounters, character routines, and other activities outside the central story.
The 80-hour run did not include any future post-launch updates or online content. For now, it remains a glimpse at one developer’s time with the game, not a promise that every playthrough will reach the same total.
