GTA 6 Will Trade 25 Years of Tap-to-Sprint for an L3 Click
Creator MikeShowSha said the left-stick click will trigger sprinting in the game's default controller layout.
Grand Theft Auto 6 will trade one of Rockstar Games’ most familiar controller habits for a single stick click. When the game launches in November, sprinting will be assigned to L3 by default, replacing the long-running setup that asked players to tap X or A repeatedly.
MikeShowSha, one of the creators invited to preview Grand Theft Auto 6 behind closed doors, described the change in a Q&A video. Pressing the left stick will trigger sprinting in the default control layout, bringing the series closer to the setup used by many other games.
Tap-to-sprint is leaving the default layout
Rockstar Games has used the tap-to-sprint input across Grand Theft Auto for roughly 25 years. Players traditionally had to tap the face button repeatedly to run, with quicker tapping tied to faster movement. It was an unmistakable part of escaping police chases, even if it could make a tense getaway unnecessarily hard on the thumb.
Grand Theft Auto 5 allowed players to change the control scheme, so some fans may already be accustomed to using L3 for sprinting. Grand Theft Auto 6 will make that arrangement the starting point instead of an option players need to select themselves.
Why the new sprint input could help
Clicking L3 turns sprinting into one deliberate input rather than a repeated series of presses. That could make movement more comfortable for players who dislike rapid tapping or find it difficult, while also matching a control convention common in games such as Call of Duty and Battlefield.
The adjustment will not change what sprinting does, but it will change how players reach it from the moment they begin the game. After decades of tapping X or A in Grand Theft Auto, clicking the left stick may take some getting used to, even if it feels familiar everywhere else.
