Sony May Delay Its 2028 PlayStation Disc Cutoff, but the Evidence Is Thin

An industry veteran disputes the Gamescom chatter, but neither Sony nor Microsoft has confirmed a change to the announced discless 2028 plan.

Sony’s announced plan to stop manufacturing PlayStation game discs in January 2028 is facing a direct rebuttal, not a confirmed reversal. The rumor says PlayStation could delay its digital-only move because Microsoft is allegedly telling publishers that its next console will rely entirely on physical releases, but no Sony announcement supports a change.

The claim gained attention through reports including the Eurogamer Spain podcast, where one host said they had heard talk at Gamescom about a possible change to Sony’s policy. That left the rumor resting on podcast discussion rather than a formal statement.

An August 29, 2026 social-media post then added a specific claim, saying Microsoft has been telling publishers that its next system, Project Helix, will be “100% physical.” The post connects that alleged strategy to a possible delay of Sony’s digital-only plans, but it offers no supporting statement from either company.

An industry veteran disputes the Gamescom claim

Richard Browne, who has worked at Sony, Psygnosis, Tencent, and other companies, challenged that account in an August 30, 2026 post. Browne wrote that there was no discussion at Gamescom about Sony changing its strategy and that publishers were following the company’s guidance for a discless 2028.

Browne also said Microsoft would go discless if it launches a new console, directly challenging the claim that Project Helix will be entirely physical. His statement is a stronger counterpoint to the original podcast chatter, but it is not a formal announcement from Microsoft or Sony.

Microsoft’s position remains unclear. In a recent interview, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma dodged a question about the next console’s approach to physical games. That leaves both the alleged all-physical plan and any supposed Sony response unconfirmed.

Sony has already started preparing for the 2028 cutoff

Sony has already started retraining staff at its physical-disc manufacturing facility in Austria. The company has also said the backlash has not affected its business, even as some players have threatened to cancel PS Plus subscriptions, buy games elsewhere, and join an indefinite PS5 blackout.

That staff transition does not make a reversal impossible, but it suggests the 2028 policy is already being put into practice. The shift would also put more pressure on the PS Store changes Sony would need, especially around ownership, refunds, pricing, discovery, and rewards. Sony’s recent PS5 license notice has also reminded players that digital software is licensed rather than sold.

There is no obvious business reason in the rumor for Sony to reverse course simply because Microsoft might choose a different strategy. Digital purchases give publishers more money per sale, while Xbox Series X|S already leans heavily toward downloads through Game Pass and other digital distribution. Some Microsoft first-party releases require additional downloads even when they ship on disc, while others have not received disc versions.

Hardware costs provide another reason to remove a disc drive from future consoles, since using fewer components can reduce manufacturing expenses. That context does not disprove either side of the rumor, but it leaves the available case for a reversal resting on podcast chatter and social-media claims rather than an official policy change.

Sony could still change its plans, but the company’s announced January 2028 target remains the only concrete timetable in view. Browne’s rebuttal makes the rumor look less convincing, while Sharma’s unanswered interview question leaves Microsoft’s future hardware strategy unresolved. A formal statement from Sony, Microsoft, or the publishers involved would be needed before treating the rumor as a real policy change.
