Sony’s disc-equipped PS5 consoles are now reaching retailers with packaging that warns buyers about a major change coming in January 2028. The notice says newly released PlayStation games will be available through the PS Store and retailers in digital format only once the cutoff arrives.
⚠️ Ya están empezando a llegar remesas de consolas PS5 a las tiendas con este mensaje en la caja:

The same message says discs for games released before January 2028 will continue to work on the console. It appears in several languages, putting Sony’s physical-game policy directly in front of customers while the disc-based PS5 is still being sold.
A warning printed on the box
The packaging explains that new PlayStation releases will move to digital-only sales from January 2028. The notice reads: “Important Notice: From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only.”
The image prompted some questions because the sticker appears to sit at an angle, but the account that shared it disputed suggestions that it was fake. The notice also makes clear that the change will not disable older discs, which will remain playable on the console.
The notice reinforces that Sony has not changed its plan to stop manufacturing physical games in January 2028. The company has already begun retraining staff at its manufacturing plant in Austria, while its investor messaging has said that online protests have not affected the business.
During an earnings-results Q&A, Sony CFO Lin Tao said the company understood players’ strong feelings and the memories connected to physical games. Sony’s focus remains keeping players engaged with PlayStation’s digital ecosystem as the change approaches.
Sony has also been speaking with retailers about its disc-free future. Stores in the United States could continue selling boxed digital codes, meaning physical game packaging may remain available even when it no longer contains a disc.
Why Sony is sticking with the plan
Recent US boxed-game figures give Sony a clear commercial argument. Only seven PS5 games had sold more than 100,000 physical copies in the United States as of July 11, 2026.
Digital sales tell a very different story. Estimates put the combined sales of the digital-only Call of Duty: Black Ops PS5 ports at more than 11 million copies. That contrast helps explain why Sony continues to forecast record revenue for its PlayStation division this fiscal year.
Physical-game backlash continues
Players are planning a weeklong blackout from August 23 through August 30 to protest Sony’s decision. Participants are being asked to avoid playing, logging in, and making purchases across Sony’s platforms. If Sony reaches its revenue forecast, the PlayStation division would surpass Nintendo’s pandemic-era high.
A petition opposing the policy has also surpassed 100,000 signatures, DualShockers reported.
The new box language does not introduce a new policy, but it makes the January 2028 cutoff much harder for buyers to miss. For now, Sony’s manufacturing changes, sales data, and investor outlook all point toward the company continuing with its digital-only direction.
The January 2028 cutoff is still ahead, but the packaging puts Sony’s direction in front of every disc-console buyer. Share your thoughts in the comments, and follow the latest updates on X, Bluesky, YouTube, and Instagram.
