Why Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Won’t Simply Be A Plague Tale 3

Asobo's new adventure pairs Sophia with heavier combat, freer movement, and a Minoan-inspired setting.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will launch on August 27, but Asobo Studio is making it clear that this is not simply a continuation of the previous games with a new number attached. The upcoming adventure takes the series into heavier combat, freer movement, and a world inspired by ancient Minoan civilization.

Set 15 years before A Plague Tale: Requiem, the game follows Sophia, a fierce young plunderer searching for answers about her past. Rather than continuing Hugo and Amicia’s story, Asobo built a new kind of journey around a different lead, a different setting, and a much more active style of play.

Speaking in an Xbox Wire interview, Asobo co-founder David Dedeine explained that Hugo’s fate at the end of Requiem gave the previous story a real conclusion. A direct A Plague Tale 3 was not the direction the team wanted to take, especially since a game centered on Basilius could have felt too close to another sequel.

Sophia changes the shape of the adventure

Sophia originally began as a supporting character, but the team quickly saw that she could carry a game of her own. Her more forceful and aggressive personality suited the combat-focused design better than the quieter, stealth-first approach associated with Amicia.

That choice affected nearly every part of development. The shift toward action changed the level design, cinematics, dialogue, and the way encounters are built. Resonance still carries the emotional weight of the franchise, but it is no longer built around avoiding danger whenever possible.

The story itself is intended to feel lighter than the previous entries, although “lighter” does not mean cheerful. Grief and other difficult themes remain at the center of the experience, according to Sophia actress Anna Demetriou. The tone may change in places, but the emotional concerns that define A Plague Tale are still present.

Combat and movement are no longer side features

Players will have more freedom to decide how Sophia moves through danger. Vincent Trinel, the game’s level designer, explained that Requiem used clear white markers to show where Amicia could climb. In Resonance, Sophia can jump and climb almost anywhere by default, which creates a different problem for the developers: keeping that freedom while preventing players from reaching areas they are not meant to access.

A grappling hook adds another layer to that movement system and allows Sophia to reach heights of up to 10 meters. Chase scenes also give players more control. Instead of relying mainly on scripted reflex moments, the new game asks players to use Sophia’s agility and make their own decisions during dangerous escapes.

Combat includes parries, quick reactions, tricks, and powerful strikes. Enemies are drawn to the island by a mysterious treasure, leaving Sophia to outmaneuver them while dealing with the other threats hidden in the environment. The result is an adventure that should feel more active from moment to moment, rather than a stealth game with occasional action sequences.

A new world built around Minoan mythology

Asobo also had to create a setting that did not already exist in the same grounded way as the locations from Requiem. The game’s world draws heavily from the largely forgotten Minoan civilization, giving the team room to design its own locations, systems, and history.

Sophia’s story moves between her medieval-era world and ancient Minoan times. Echoes from the past influence the conflicts of the present, while the Macula returns in a different form. That meant respecting the rules of A Plague Tale lore without simply repeating the role that rats played in the earlier games.

The setting also supports a new collection of puzzles. Sophia uses a stolen Minoan sphere to manipulate light, with the device tied to the work of Daedalus and the island’s deeper mysteries. A notebook helps her follow her crew’s path, uncover hidden information, and piece together what happened before her arrival.

The familiar Plague Tale atmosphere remains

Even with the changes to combat and movement, Asobo is holding on to the visual style that connects the game to its predecessors. Character artist Marco Puricelli pointed to sweeping vistas that resemble paintings, thick fog, and volumetric lighting as key parts of the studio’s approach.

Those elements give Resonance a recognizable identity while the setting and gameplay move in a new direction. The game may not be the direct sequel some players expected after Requiem, but it is still built around the same combination of beauty, danger, mystery, and emotional pain.

The game’s August 27 launch will bring it to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Game Pass. Xbox Play Anywhere support will also allow players to play on console and PC at no additional cost.
