Windrose hits Early Access with a huge Steam debut and strong player reviews

The pirate survival game peaked at 69,544 concurrent players on launch day and held an 88% positive rating from more than 1,400 Steam reviews.

Windrose has opened its Early Access run on Steam with a strong first day, pulling in a peak of 69,544 concurrent players and holding an 88% positive rating from more than 1,400 user reviews.

The open-world pirate survival game first caught attention during Steam Next Fest in February, when its demo introduced players to a mix of sailing, combat, and survival systems. The full Early Access release landed on April 14, 2026, and the early response suggests that first impression carried over in a big way.

According to SteamDB, Windrose reached that 69,544 peak on launch day, which is a sharp start for a debut from Windrose Crew. The game has also avoided the kind of rough technical complaints that often crowd out goodwill during a new release, at least in the opening hours.

Windrose is leaning hard into pirate fantasy, with Black Flag-style sailing, Sea of Thieves-like combat, and Valheim-inspired crafting and survival systems wrapped into one package. That combination has clearly clicked with a lot of players, and the early review sentiment reflects that. At the time of writing, the Steam community page showed more than 1,400 reviews, with 88% marked positive.

There is also a publishing note worth keeping in mind. Pocketpair picked up publishing rights for Japan in April, but by then Windrose had already built momentum through its demo and viral attention during Steam Next Fest. For a genre that has gone without many fresh pirate-focused options for years, Windrose is giving players something that feels familiar without simply copying the old standbys.
