Marvel Rivals Might Let Players Vote on New Heroes, Says Game Director

NetEase considers fan voting to help decide which Marvel heroes join the roster next.

Marvel Rivals is planning a new way to involve players in deciding which heroes will be added next. The game’s director, Guangyun Chen, mentioned that the development team will take player votes into account when planning future seasons. This could give fans a direct say in the ever-growing roster of Marvel characters.

Since Marvel Rivals promised a fresh hero roughly every month and a half, they’ve kept up with that pace so far, including recent additions like Phoenix and Blade. But with so many Marvel heroes to choose from, the question of which ones get priority is a big one. Blade’s arrival, for example, came months after being teased, showing how tricky scheduling can be.

Chen shared with VideoGamer that players often take the initiative to vote on heroes they want to see, and the team finds this input helpful. They plan to use these votes as a key factor in deciding which heroes to add next. Imagine the voting list: there are thousands of characters spanning over 85 years of Marvel history, and NetEase is licensed to explore the entire Marvel universe, so the possibilities are vast.

Of course, not every choice will be up to the community alone. Chen explained that the internal team will research every player suggestion to check feasibility. I kind of love that balance; it keeps the game fresh while letting fans feel heard. Plus, the roster isn’t just about the usual big names. Characters like Jeff the Land Shark have gained popularity through Marvel Rivals, introducing players to some lesser-known but equally fascinating heroes.

Chen also emphasized that the devs want to spotlight characters who offer distinct experiences beyond the heavy hitters. This approach helps players discover new aspects of the Marvel Universe, which is the true joy of a game like this. The devs keep communication open via Discord, responding to feedback, such as the recent buff to Strategists, after players voiced concerns about balance.
