Valve still has not shared a preorder date for the Steam Frame, and the headset’s subreddit has reached the point where failed predictions are turning into memes, random posts, and increasingly desperate guesses.
Valve previously confirmed that its upcoming VR headset would launch during summer. That window remains open as of July 28, but two dates that the community had been watching, July 9 and July 27, passed without a preorder announcement.
The subreddit has moved from detective work to chaos
A top post on the Steam Frame subreddit summed up the mood by declaring that the community had “lost its mind.” The post pointed out that users had expected preorders on July 27, then began filling the subreddit with increasingly absurd material after that prediction failed.
The date theories were not completely random. Some users examined Valve’s usual announcement days and tried to place a preorder window between Steam Festivals, when the Steam store’s front page would have less competition for attention. That reasoning produced July 9 and July 27 as possible announcement dates, although neither prediction came true.
Another rumor pointed to July 24 after an X user shared an unverified screenshot claiming that the Steam Frame rollout would begin on that date. The claim faced skepticism from the community, and the date passed without a confirmed launch. The post remains unverified evidence rather than an official Valve announcement.
With each guess falling through, the subreddit has filled with prayers, lucky potatoes, memes, and posts that barely relate to the headset. One user even treated a strange message in the mail as a possible sign that the Steam Frame would arrive the next day. A separate post asking what was happening in the community made its way to the main Steam subreddit, where the same confusion continued.
The jokes are covering a real desire for information. Some prospective buyers have already sold existing VR hardware while waiting for Valve’s device, and one community comment said its author had sold a Quest 3 months earlier and was ready to return to VR.
Why the timing matters
Valve’s silence has also left potential buyers worrying about the headset’s price. The Steam Frame uses a Qualcomm chip, and Qualcomm plans to raise chip prices on September 1, 2026. That timing has led some buyers to hope that Valve announces preorders before the increase takes effect.
The possible cost pressure comes after Valve’s Steam Machine launched at a high price, which has made the company’s next hardware prices a sensitive subject. A recent report on the Steam Frame’s possible Qualcomm cost problem also noted that the headset includes 16 GB of LPDDR5X RAM.
Even if Valve already has launch inventory and supply agreements in place, that would not necessarily prevent a later price increase. For buyers who already expect the Steam Frame to cost a lot, ordering earlier could at least remove one uncertainty and bring the headset closer to their hands sooner.
For now, Valve has offered no specific preorder or release date. The Steam Frame remains scheduled for summer, while its community continues to treat every passing day as a possible announcement day.
