
Valve’s still-unreleased Steam Frame may face higher production costs before it reaches stores. Qualcomm reportedly told customers that prices for its chips will rise by a double-digit percentage starting September 1, 2026.
The information comes from a customer letter sent Friday that was seen by Bloomberg. Qualcomm supplies Snapdragon processors for phones, Windows on Arm laptops, and VR headsets, so the increase could affect several types of gaming hardware.
Steam Frame could be caught in the middle
Valve’s Steam Frame uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The wireless headset is built around game streaming and includes a special dongle for foveated streaming. That system sends higher-quality visuals for the area the user is looking at while saving bandwidth elsewhere.
Valve has said its three upcoming hardware products, the Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame, will launch by the end of summer. That deadline is still ahead, and the company has not confirmed a final Steam Frame price in the supplied material.
Steam Frame was initially planned for early 2026, but Valve later pointed to manufacturing costs and memory supply problems as factors in the delay. That makes Qualcomm’s planned increase another cost concern before the headset reaches stores.
Valve is unlikely to absorb every added component cost, although the company may have some protection from stock already in the United States. The report says tens of thousands of kilograms worth of headsets are currently there, which could give Valve units to sell before Qualcomm’s higher prices affect later production.
The Steam Machine already showed how hardware costs can affect Valve’s plans. Memory shortages pushed the starting price of the living-room PC to $1,049 before launch, even though Valve said it wanted to sell the system for less.
Qualcomm’s increase could reach beyond Valve
Valve is not the only VR hardware company that relies on Qualcomm. Meta has traditionally used the company’s chips in its Quest headsets and is reportedly working on multiple next-generation devices. Meta’s Quest 3 and the Pico 4 Ultra use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, while Steam Frame uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Meta is expected to share more about its next-generation products during Meta Connect at the end of September 2026.
Qualcomm reportedly tried to find alternative component sources before deciding to raise prices. The available information does not identify those parts, so it remains unclear whether memory or another part of the company’s system-on-chip supply is behind the increase.
The timing is difficult for Qualcomm’s wider gaming push, too. Its Snapdragon X2 Elite processors are targeting Windows on Arm PCs, while memory shortages and higher component costs are already affecting hardware prices across the industry. If the higher chip prices continue into new product launches, both PC makers and VR companies may have to choose between raising prices or accepting slimmer margins.
