Mega Man: Dual Override Reveals Proto Man’s Close-Range Role at TGS 2026
Capcom also detailed Proto Man's shield abilities and overheating system, more than 50 Custom Chips, and a time-limited Override that leaves the selected hero vulnerable afterward.

Proto Man took on a clearly different role during Capcom’s Tokyo Game Show 2026 presentation for Mega Man: Dual Override. While Mega Man will remain a balanced fighter with both close-range and long-range options, Proto Man will deal more damage and focus on close-range attacks.
Proto Man’s short-range Proto Buster hits hardest at point-blank distance, giving his combat style a more aggressive and technical rhythm. His weapon can also resemble Mega Man X’s Zero’s Z-Saber, while his progression will separate him from Mega Man even further through shield-based abilities and a heat-management system.
As the Mega Man series approaches its 40th anniversary in 2027, Proto Man is returning to a starring role after debuting as an adversary in Mega Man 3 and becoming one of the Blue Bomber’s most trusted allies. His last playable appearance was in Mega Man 10.

Proto Man turns his shield into a combat toolkit
The Proto Shield works as both a defensive tool and an offensive weapon in Dual Override. Rather than switching between individual abilities one at a time, Proto Man will build a loadout of Shield Actions that can be activated on command for extra offense and mobility.
Director Shinya Ikuta and producer Hiroyuki Minamitani explained that Proto Man will gain new shield abilities as he defeats the game’s Robot Masters and other stage bosses. Mega Man, meanwhile, will keep the series’ familiar Special Weapons system.
Mega Man: Dual Override already has eight regular bosses confirmed. Seven will be designed by the CAPCOM team, while the eighth will be chosen from the finalists of the Mega Man: Dual Override Robot Master Design Contest. The winner will be revealed later through the game’s official social media accounts.
Repeatedly using Proto Man’s shield abilities puts strain on his body and can cause him to overheat. Charging into every encounter with the shield raised may sound appealing, but the heat system gives that plan a clear limit and rewards more deliberate timing.
Custom Chips give both characters more options
More than 50 Custom Chips will be available at launch, giving Mega Man and Proto Man extra abilities to equip. Each chip grants either an active ability or a passive effect, letting players build toward extra offense, better survivability, or a mix of both. Rapid Buster and Barrier were shown as early examples of what the system can add to a character’s toolkit.
Players who want a more traditional Mega Man setup will also be able to avoid most of the chip system. A readily available chip can limit the setup to calling Rush for assistance, keeping the focus on the core platforming and combat.
Override adds power with a clear drawback
Override adds another layer to the two characters. Activating it temporarily overclocks the selected hero and strengthens their abilities, but the effect is time-limited. Once it is used, that character will remain vulnerable for a set period, giving the power-up a clear cost.
Proto Man’s return was first shown alongside Twinkle Girl in Dual Override’s first gameplay reveal, which also introduced the basic Custom Chips and Override systems.
Mega Man: Dual Override is planned for spring 2027
Mega Man: Dual Override will release in spring 2027 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Xbox on PC. Playable demos will also be featured at Tokyo Game Show 2026. A broader platform lineup previously announced for the game includes the additional Xbox versions.
Proto Man’s shield-focused kit and heat management give him a very different rhythm from Mega Man’s familiar shooting style. Which Shield Action or Custom Chip build would you want to try first? Share your pick in the comments, then follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram, Steam, and Telegram.
