So, you thought the world of Minecraft couldn’t get any more interesting? Well, hold on tight because Markus “Notch” Persson just dropped a hint that might have fans buzzing. In a recent post on X, he casually mentioned that he’s considering working on a “spiritual successor” to his iconic creation. It’s like finding an old toy in the attic that you thought was lost forever!
If you’re unfamiliar with Notch’s history, he’s the mastermind behind Minecraft, which holds the title of the best-selling game ever, a feat that’s hard to argue against. After selling his brainchild and developer Mojang to Microsoft for a whopping $2.5 billion back in 2014, he’s taken some time away from big projects. But now? It seems he’s feeling that creative itch again.
Notch started this whole thing with a poll asking fans what they wanted him to work on next. And guess what? He responded by saying he “basically announced” Minecraft 2. Now, that’s not something you hear every day, it’s like your favorite band teasing a reunion tour!
I basically announced minecraft 2.
I thought that maybe people ACTUALLY do want me to make another game that's super similar to the first one, and I'm loving working on games again.
I don't super duper care exactly which game I make first (or even if I make more), but I do know…

You can feel his excitement spilling through the screen! He’s also honest about how spiritual successors can often fall flat, like when your favorite childhood cereal gets reformulated and doesn’t taste right anymore. Yet here we are, hoping for something great from him.
Of course, legal strings are attached unless Notch teams up directly with Microsoft. He can’t use the classic Minecraft IP in his new venture. Talk about being caught between nostalgia and creativity!
“I also very much value being a man of my word,” Notch continued thoughtfully during his musings online. “I intend to do this in a way that doesn’t infringe upon the incredible work Mojang is doing.” Now that’s classy!
This news comes hot on the heels of other exciting happenings surrounding Minecraft. Last year, we saw global theme park rights snagged by Merlin Entertainments, who brought us attractions like Alton Towers and Legoland. There’s even a live-action movie set for release this year! So yeah, things are moving in the world of blocks and crafting.
