Diablo V Will Begin After Diablo Has Already Won
The team also discussed Season of Hell's Legacy for Diablo IV and the Amazon class, which is planned for the first half of 2027.
Diablo V will begin in a Sanctuary where Diablo has already won, taking the series into a post-apocalyptic story about scarce survivors, a desperate Caravan, and the few signs of hope left behind. The game is planned for 2029.
The episode of the Official Xbox Podcast recorded at BlizzCon 2026 also covered Diablo IV’s Season of Hell’s Legacy and the Amazon class planned for the first half of 2027.
Diablo V starts with Sanctuary in ruins
The reveal trailer’s “Sanctuary Falls” moment points to a story unlike the usual fight to stop Diablo from taking control. The developers described a world where that battle has already been lost, leaving very few survivors and only scattered chances to find hope. The Caravan will serve as one of those places, giving the game a human center inside a desolate version of Sanctuary.
Diablo’s victory will also shape the world itself. The team is building around the idea of Hell breaking through into Sanctuary, with outposts of Hell and visual details that show how humanity endured the invasion. The goal is to push the series’ dark fantasy further while giving Diablo its own central story as the lead Prime Evil.
One internal development goal sums up the ambition for the campaign: “Best campaign ever.” The team wants to build on Diablo IV’s cinematic storytelling, detailed characters, and stronger focus on the player while taking those ideas further in Diablo V. A Diablo animated series for Netflix was also announced, although the developers did not share further details during the discussion.
Season of Hell’s Legacy looks back at Diablo history
Diablo IV’s Season of Hell’s Legacy will celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary by sending players into its past. Deckard Cain returns from the dead as a guide, while three Dark Wanderers become enemies that players must defeat and redeem.
Defeating the Dark Wanderers lets players extract Splinters of Evil, which function like echoes of Soulstones. Each splinter unlocks one of a Prime Evil’s signature powers, and further upgrades can add effects or push that power toward its final form. Progress also affects the War Plans trees, meaning the abilities can modify activities throughout the endgame instead of only increasing direct combat strength.
Mephisto will remain part of the season after appearing in the BlizzCon demo and taking over a World Boss encounter. Players will need to search around Skovos and follow the clues to find him.
The Amazon will bring javelins to Diablo IV
The Amazon class is planned for the first half of 2027 and will introduce the javelin as a new weapon type. Developers described her as a disciplined soldier who can move between long-range bow attacks, mid-range javelin strikes, and close combat with little friction.
Four Amazon archetypes are being discussed. The Ranger focuses on the bow, while the Skirmisher is built around attacking quickly before moving away. The Champion uses a sword and shield with support from banners, and the Commander can fight alongside Valkyries and Vallochs. The class is still in development, but its early direction gives it a distinct identity from Diablo IV’s more familiar rage-driven melee options.
