Black Flag Resynced’s controversial DLC is already a million-dollar business

Alinea Analytics estimates that Ubisoft sold 701,000 Steam copies of the remake and generated $35 million in gross revenue.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced faced plenty of criticism for its optional DLC and microtransactions, but the controversy has not stopped players from spending money on the remake. Alinea Analytics estimates that the day-one DLC generated nearly $1 million for Ubisoft.

The estimate comes from Rhys Elliott, head of market analysis at Alinea Analytics. His figures also put the Steam version at 701,000 copies sold and $35 million in gross revenue shortly after launch.

That performance came despite negative attention around the game’s additional purchases. The available DLC and microtransactions can add up to more than $80, although Ubisoft has described the content as optional. The standard edition includes the core game, so players do not need the extra packs to play through the main experience.

Black Flag Resynced also posted stronger Steam revenue than Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which was the first entry in the series to launch on Steam at the same time as its console versions. Elliott estimates that Resynced brought in $22.4 million on its first day through Steam unit sales. Shadows generated $9.5 million on its launch day, giving Resynced a 2.35-times lead.

Four days after launch, Resynced had reached $35.1 million in cumulative Steam unit revenue, compared with $22.2 million for Shadows at the same point. That put the remake roughly 1.58 times ahead, even though Resynced launched at $59.99 while Shadows carried a standard price of $69.99.

The comparison with older Assassin’s Creed releases was even wider. At the same point in their launches, Elliott estimates that Resynced had earned nine times as much as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and nearly 19 times as much as Assassin’s Creed Mirage through Steam.

Ubisoft’s remake also became the first Assassin’s Creed game to pass 100,000 concurrent players on Steam. The game’s staggered release schedule and platform details were previously laid out in the Black Flag Resynced launch timing guide.

Elliott’s figures are estimates rather than Ubisoft’s own financial disclosure, and they focus on Steam performance. Even with that limit, the numbers show that the remake’s DLC sales have added a sizeable amount of revenue on top of the game’s unit sales, while the PC launch has given Ubisoft one of its strongest Assassin’s Creed openings on Valve’s storefront.
