War Thunder’s Dreams Come True Event Opens Oct. 28 With the Mistel 2

The German Rank III premium bomber pairs an unarmed Fw 190A-8 with a warhead carried by a modified Ju-88G-1.

War Thunder‘s Dreams Come True event begins Oct. 28 with the Mistel 2, a German Rank III premium bomber that sends one aircraft toward a target as an explosive payload. Gaijin’s Steam announcement introduces it as the first coupled-aircraft design in the game.

The unusual setup combines an Fw 190A-8 fighter with a modified Ju-88G-1. The bomber’s cockpit has been replaced by a shaped-charge warhead. Gaijin lists a 3,500 kg warhead with a TNT equivalent of nearly 2,200 kg. The fighter pilot releases the bomber, which then flies straight toward its target on autopilot.

After releasing the bomber, the Fw 190A-8 has no forward-firing armament. Its cannons and machine guns were removed, leaving the carrier unable to defend itself with guns. It must return to an airfield to rearm, although Arcade mode reloads the payload while the aircraft is airborne. Removing the weapons also cuts weight, making the fighter fast enough to potentially outrun pursuers on its way back.

Gaijin rebuilt the Ju 88’s nose for the warhead and created custom mounting, release, and guidance mechanics for the paired aircraft. Historically, about 250 Mistel units across several variants were built, but their combat use was sporadic. During their first deployment against the Allied invasion fleet in Normandy in June 1944, one attack damaged the British frigate HMS Nith, though no major vessels were sunk.

Would the Fw 190’s speed make up for carrying no guns after releasing its payload? For more coverage of unusual aircraft designs like this coupled pair, stay connected through X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram, Steam, and Telegram.
