Steam Next Fest Preview Lists 8,011 Demo Entries as Indie Cloning Concerns Grow

One studio canceled its planned public demo in favor of closed sessions, while another accused a Steam release of copying its code.

Steam Next Fest’s October 2026 press preview lists 8,011 demo matches, roughly twice the number featured in June 2026 and far above the just-over-1,000 demos shown in June 2022. The public festival catalog lists 7,017 demos, nearly twice the number available during June’s edition. The figures come from different Steam listings, so they describe separate views of the event rather than a single count. Neither total shows how many projects copy other games or use AI.

A GamesRadar browse of recently added demos identified several whose cover art or in-game assets appeared AI-generated. That visual impression does not confirm how those assets were made or measure AI use across the full lineup.

Alliance Arts canceled the public demo for Drunken Goddess Reflux planned for Oct. 19, opting for closed online sessions for a limited number of participants instead. The studio cited concerns that others could quickly copy the game’s presentation and gameplay. Participants must agree to its requirements, the studio said in its Steam announcement.

A separate dispute concerns A Game About Needle In A Haystack, released by Little Field Studios on Oct. 16. In a Steam announcement, creator NoGlyph accused the game of using code from its own title, Needle In A Haystack. NoGlyph said it found 13 classes with identical names and exact matches in more than half of the functions in the relevant section. The developer also cited error messages that referred to a shader from its project and said it filed a copyright notice with Valve.

Public demos offer independent teams a route to an audience, but they also put a game’s presentation and mechanics in view before release. Alliance Arts’ decision shows one tradeoff a studio may weigh when deciding how to present its work.
