Ape Escape Revival Is Reportedly Underway at Evening Star
Gerstmann said the project was barely underway when he first heard about it, but his early account does not establish its current stage or whether it is a remake or new entry.

Ape Escape may be returning in a new game from Evening Star, the studio formed by members of the Sonic Mania team and co-founded by Christian Whitehead. The studio also developed Penny’s Big Breakaway. Jeff Gerstmann said he understood an external studio was making the game rather than Team Asobi, and Video Games Chronicle has separately linked Evening Star to the project through its own sources.
Gerstmann said the project had only just been greenlit and was barely underway when he first heard about it. He did not think it was close to release, and recalled asking about it at DICE in February 2026. He cautioned that his original tip was not strongly corroborated by multiple sources. Those early comments do not establish the game’s current development stage.
His account also leaves open whether Evening Star is remaking an earlier Ape Escape or developing a new entry. The series has been quiet for years aside from a cameo in Astro Bot.
Sony is also reportedly exploring licensing deals with smaller outside studios for other dormant PlayStation franchises. The 2025 Everybody’s Golf: Hot Shots, developed by Bandai Namco under license, offers a recent example.
