Icarus Week 251 Adds a Tameable Kiwi With Nighttime Bonuses

The new companion can boost carry weight, egg production, and nighttime mining and wood-felling yields, while a Field Guide category update is planned for next week.

Icarus Week 251 adds the long-requested tameable Kiwi, giving players a companion that trades daytime combat strength for stronger nighttime perks. The update also fixes several crafting, taming, and deployable issues, while RocketWerkz is putting Great Hunts Elysium content through external testing. Full details appear in the Week 251 Steam announcement.

The prior Week 250 update previewed the Kiwi as the following week’s companion, and Week 251 now delivers it.

How to tame the Kiwi in Icarus

Kiwis are caught with a Snare Trap and specialized Kiwi Bait, both crafted at the Ranching Station. Set the trap in a forest, attach the bait, and wait until night for a Kiwi to take it. Once trapped, the animal must be fed fresh carcasses while it is defended and kept safe. The Kiwi remains dangerous until the taming process is complete.

Combat-focused Kiwis are weaker and slower than wolves during the day, but their nighttime damage and movement improve when players invest in the relevant talents. A domesticated Kiwi can also support a base with a Carry Weight Capacity aura, help with egg production, and provide an aura that increases nearby Mining and Wood Felling Yield during nighttime.

Week 251 also cleans up crafting and animal systems

Several smaller fixes address problems that could get in the way of regular prospecting. Skinning creatures that drop ice with an Obsidian Knife will no longer create dummy water items, and crafting with oil-based resources such as the Polymeriser will now provide crafting experience. Cake and roast platters no longer highlight their garnishes when players look at them, the Deluxe Leather Saddle has been corrected for the Slinker, and the T4 food trough now uses the proper proxy mesh with active grain crafting effects.

Outside those fixes, the update corrects Kiwi aura behavior, improves Lightning Rod assets, fixes localization for Dropship Quest UI text, and prevents aura-granted weight reduction from saving to the database. The latter change keeps temporary aura effects from becoming permanent after they should expire.

Field Guide subcategories are planned for next week

RocketWerkz is also preparing a quality-of-life pass for the Prospector Field Guide. New subcategories will make items easier to find, while clicking a parent category will still show the unfiltered view. The team is continuing final testing and polish on the Great Hunts Elysium content, with external testing already underway.
