Ace Combat 8 Confirms Annihilation Battle Ahead of Its October 2 Launch

Mission 7 will let pilots choose targets, manage supply lines, and trigger chain reactions during a timed counterattack.

Bandai Namco is giving Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve a mission built around player choice, with Annihilation Battle confirmed for Mission 7 ahead of the game’s October 2, 2026 launch. The timed counterattack will ask pilots to prioritize targets, manage weapon replenishment through supply lines, and decide when to return to the return line.

A PlayStation Blog announcement also introduced the first story trailer, which moves between the daily life of The Endurance’s crew and the war threatening the Federation of Central Usea.

Mission 7 makes target order part of the battle

Mission 7 will place several major facilities in the combat area, including a solar power plant, an oil tank, an air base, and an ammo dump. Pilots can decide which targets to destroy and in what order, then use supply lines to restore their weapons before pushing back into the fight.

Manabu Shimomoto, the game’s producer, described the mission type as a strong expression of Ace Combat’s central idea, giving players room to eliminate enemies according to their own judgment. The time limit adds pressure without forcing every sortie into the same attack pattern.

Chain reactions add another risk to Annihilation Battle

Target selection will affect more than the immediate score. Hitting a flammable object such as an oil tank can start an explosion that destroys nearby buildings, while a downed aircraft may damage structures close to its crash site. Choosing when and where to attack could turn the battlefield itself into another weapon.

The story trailer sets up new threats

Trailer footage shows a confrontation between Shadow 22, the leader of the elite Sotoan Air Force Shadows Unit, and Joker Flight, led by the Wings of Theve. The campaign will also send players against Sotoan ace squadrons and colossal superweapons as the crew fights to protect the Federation of Central Usea.

Among those threats is Megafloat Fatsia, a six-kilometer artificial island off the west coast of the Republic of Sotoa. The facility serves as an arms factory and invasion supply station, with a 2,000-meter runway, CIWS, SAM batteries, railguns, and UAVs that extend its defensive sensor coverage.

Another danger is Tonitrus Spear, a Sotoan satellite weapon positioned at a low-orbit altitude of 500 kilometers. It fires dense metal rods at targets using mass and gravitational acceleration, giving pilots another attack pattern to evade when Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches on PS5 on October 2, 2026.
