Ace Combat 8 Brings Its Silent Pilot Into the Middle of the Story

First-person scenes, small choices, squad commands, and radio calls connect the player to the Federation of Central Usea's desperate war.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is giving its usually silent ace a much more personal place in the war before sending that pilot back into the sky. Story Mode opens with your pilot rescued from the water after a battle, then places you aboard the Federation of Central Usea’s battered navy as it fights the invading Sotoans.

Project Aces is changing how the series presents its protagonist, using first-person scenes, small responses, squad commands, and radio calls to bring the conflict closer to the player. A PlayStation Blog feature details that approach ahead of the game’s October 2, 2026 launch on PS5.

Wings of Theve starts with a borrowed identity

The Endurance, one of the FCU’s remaining aircraft carriers, pulls you aboard and assigns you as navigator to Jan “Rex” Cope. Cope is presented to the public as the legendary Wings of Theve, but his actual orders are to avoid combat and preserve the FCU’s propaganda symbol.

After both pilots are shot down and Cope dies, you inherit his call sign and replace him in secret. Your combat skill then gives the struggling FCU a real ace to place behind its carefully managed legend, even as the squadron around you gets to know the person carrying that name.

First-person scenes put you inside the squadron

Earlier Ace Combat games often kept story scenes at a distance. In Ace Combat 8, many of those moments happen from the pilot’s perspective, whether you are standing in a room or on the carrier deck with other characters. The story unfolds around you instead of simply showing you what happened, while DualSense haptic feedback adds physical response during tense scenes and battles.

Your pilot still does not speak, but the game gives you small ways to respond. The D-pad handles occasional yes-or-no decisions, the right stick lets you look around during scenes, and Triangle or Square can trigger responses at key moments.

Those choices do not create a branching campaign, but they can affect how Joker Flight reacts to your leadership. One early decision involves Coster, a squadron member who wants to leave formation briefly to protect an allied group of pilots who also happen to be a famous rock band. Letting him help earns his appreciation, turning a light moment into another way for the squadron to feel like a group of individuals rather than mission markers.

Joker Flight gets orders in and out of combat

Joker Flight’s members appear throughout briefings, between-mission scenes, and radio conversations during sorties. Their presence gives the campaign a steady human thread, especially when you can issue commands in the air. The D-pad can send squadmates after targets, call them back to your formation, or ask them to cover you.

That connection makes those commands feel more personal than a standard tactical menu. You know which pilots are flying beside you, and the game gives you reasons to use their abilities instead of treating them as anonymous support.

Radio calls keep the wider war close

Radio chatter expands the story beyond the fighter cockpit. An operation to reclaim FCU territory can become a Sotoan ambush, filling the comms with ground troops reporting their positions and calling for help. Responding to those requests can earn direct acknowledgment, and some of the people you assist may appear again in later missions.

The result is a campaign where the Wings of Theve’s reputation is more than a public image. Small decisions, familiar voices, and the pilots waiting for your orders give each sortie a clearer human cost, even when the main plot continues along the same path.
