Sony Asked The Last of Us Part II Multiplayer Mod to Stay Unreleased

Speclizer said the fan project had been in development since January and was scheduled for September after reaching 4v4 matches.

The Last of Us Part II‘s fan-made PC multiplayer mod will not reach its planned September 2026 release after Sony Interactive Entertainment asked its creator, Speclizer, not to publish it. The request arrived after months of public development, including a 25-minute gameplay video in June.

In a September 13, 2026 update, Speclizer said the project had been in development since January and was supposed to launch in September before a letter received on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requested that it remain unreleased. “Extremely sad that this never got to see the light of day,” Speclizer wrote while thanking supporters and pointing toward a future project built around their own ideas. The update did not provide another release plan for the mod.

Built around The Last of Us Part II Remastered, which does not include an official multiplayer mode, the project aimed to create a fan-made alternative using the sequel’s characters, environments, and systems. The original The Last of Us featured the 4v4 Factions mode, while Naughty Dog redirected its planned sequel multiplayer resources toward the single-player game in 2019.

Before Sony’s request, the project had been partly funded through Patreon and was being built around additions such as perks, limited listening mechanics, and custom maps. Earlier tests supported 1v1 and 2v2 matches, while the expanding feature set eventually reached 4v4 play.

By late July, 4v4 matches and leaderboards were already in place. Speclizer was also working on a Seraphite Forest map, with matchmaking among the other planned features.

A 25-minute gameplay video published in June offered a look at what Speclizer had built before Sony’s request interrupted the planned release.

Naughty Dog later announced The Last of Us Online as a separate multiplayer project in 2022, showing concept art and describing a new story and cast of characters. Cancellation followed in 2023 after Naughty Dog concluded that supporting the game with post-launch content would require all of the studio’s resources.

Speclizer’s mod offered a separate way to revisit the sequel’s characters, environments, and systems, but Sony’s request closes another possible route before it reached the public.
