A fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II has reached a major development milestone. The project can now support competitive matches with up to four players on each team, moving beyond its earlier 1v1 and 2v2 limits.
The mod is being developed by Speclizer and aims to offer a new take on the multiplayer experience that Naughty Dog abandoned when it canceled The Last of Us Online. The team is still targeting a September launch, although a specific release date has not been announced.
In a July 28 update, the project revealed that 4v4 matches were now working and shared footage from several 2v2 games.

The project has continued to add the pieces needed for a proper competitive mode. Leaderboards are already in place, while a map based on the sequel’s Seraphite Forest area is also being developed. The pause menu recreates the one from the original The Last of Us Factions, and matchmaking is part of the planned feature set.
A recent post also showed that the team was working toward animation synchronization closer to Naughty Dog’s approach in Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us Factions. The project’s progress was also reported by PC Gamer.
Speclizer’s updates have offered a steady look at how the mod is taking shape, but its final scope will not be clear until the September launch arrives. For now, the addition of 4v4 matches gives the project a much larger foundation than its original small-scale tests.
The mod will not reveal what Naughty Dog had planned for its canceled online game, but it could give PC players a way to experience multiplayer built from The Last of Us Part II‘s existing characters, environments, animations, and systems.
