Blizzard’s 1,900 Developers Secure a Union Contract With AI and Layoff Protections
The agreement gives eligible laid-off workers at least four weeks of severance, 14 months of recall rights, and negotiations over AI systems that affect working conditions.

Blizzard’s 1,900 unionized workers now have a contract covering severance, recall rights, layoffs, and artificial intelligence systems that could affect their working conditions. The agreement gives developers more than a general promise of protection, putting concrete terms around what happens when jobs disappear and how new workplace technology is introduced.

Represented by the Communications Workers of America, the workers span World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Diablo, and Blizzard’s story and franchise development teams. The contract places two of the industry’s most disruptive pressures, job cuts and AI adoption, inside a negotiated labor framework.
Severance and recall rights cross Blizzard teams
Eligible laid-off workers will receive at least four weeks of severance, while recall rights will remain active for 14 months. During that period, qualified employees can be considered for open positions anywhere at Blizzard rather than only on the team where they previously worked.
Senior World of Warcraft designer Paul Cox explained the practical effect in an interview with Aftermath. If World of Warcraft faced layoffs while Diablo needed more staff, a qualified World of Warcraft worker could be recalled into an available Diablo position. Cox said that arrangement had not previously happened in the video game industry.
AI changes will be part of labor talks
Blizzard must speak with the union before introducing AI technology that affects working conditions. The union can negotiate over the impact of those systems, and AI will remain part of regular discussions through the labor-management committee.
“It’s a new day at Blizzard, where greater power for workers is translating into more innovative games for players,” CWA president Claude Cummings Jr. said in the union’s contract announcement.
The agreement arrives before BlizzCon 2026
BlizzCon 2026 begins on September 12, putting the new agreement in place just before Blizzard’s major event. Microsoft’s planned 1,600 additional Xbox layoffs give the contract immediate context, although the deal cannot remove the uncertainty created by those cuts.
Workers now have clearer terms if their positions are eliminated, including a path to open roles across Blizzard’s games. They also have a formal seat at the table when AI tools could change how their jobs are performed.
